Distinguished Service Cross
Citation: By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W. D., 1918), the Distinguished Service Cross was awarded posthumously* by the commanding general, American Expeditionary Forces, to James Cowan Andes, Second Lieutenant, 16th Infantry, for extraordinary heroism in action near Soissons, France, on July 19, 1918. He fearlessly led his platoon in the face of heavy machine-gun fire to a cave in which several hundred Germans had taken shelter. Rather than subject any of his men to such extreme danger, he entered the cave alone and demanded the surrender of the enemy and was killed as a result of this heroic act. Residence at appointment: New York, N.Y.
* Medal was awarded to his father, George S. Andes.
