Distinguished Service Cross

Citation: Under the provisions of AR 600-45, 22 September 1943, and pursuant to authority contained in paragraph 3c, Section I, Circular No. 32, Hq ETOUSA, 20 March 1944, the Distinguished Service Cross is awarded to Technician Fourth Grade Stanley P. Appleby, 12004300, 16th Infantry, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action against the enemy on 6 June 1944, in France. Technician Fourth Appleby disembarked from his craft some fifty yards from the beach under a hail of artillery shells and machine gun fire. A large number of casualties were sustained and, but for Technician Fourth Appleby’s prompt and courageous action, would have perished in the surf. With complete disregard of his own safety, he on numerous occasions waded into the surf to lead them ashore and immediately administered first aid. Despite the intense enemy fire, Technician Fourth Appleby never slackened in his efforts to assist and render aid to the wounded on the beach. The courage and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Technician Fourth Appleby reflects great credit on himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces. Entered military service from New York.
