Distinguished Service Cross
Citation: By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W. D., 1918), the Distinguished Service Cross was awarded by the commanding general, American Expeditionary Forces, to Walter F. Arnold (Army serial No. 43957), Private, Company I, 16th Infantry, 1st Division. For extraordinary heroism in action near Exermont, France, on October 4, 1918. Pvt. Arnold, while passing through an enemy machine-gun barrage, located an enemy machine-gun position. He single-handedly rushed the position, captured the gun, and forced tho crew to surrender. Residence at enlistment: 819 Almond Street, Philadelphia, Pa.
