Distinguished Service Cross

Citation: Under the provisions of AR 600-45, 22 September 1943, and pursuant to authority contained in paragraph 3c, Section I, Circular No. 32, Hq ETOUSA, 20 March 1944, the Distinguished Service Cross is awarded to Staff Sergeant Philip C. Clark, 35011921, 16th Infantry, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action against the enemy on 6 June 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant Clark landed with the Battalion Headquarters but voluntarily joined a rifle company to aid in the assault. Leaving the slight cover of a shale shelf, he crept under heavy enemy machine gun fire to the barbed wire entanglements and forced a breach. He then led his group of men across a minefield to the foot of the heavily defended cliffs. Here, his men were pinned down by the intense machine gun fire. Staff Sergeant Clark then charged the machine gun position killing three of the crew in hand to hand combat and taking two prisoners. The personal bravery, skill and disregard of his own safety displayed by Staff Sergeant Clark reflects great credit on himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces. Entered military service from Ohio.

Soldier’s Medal

Citation: Under the provisions of AR 600-45, 22 September 1944, Sergeant (then Private First Class) Philip C. Clark, 35011921, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Second Battalion, 16th Infantry, is awarded the Soldier’s Medal for heroism in the vicinity of Gela, Sicily, 12 July 1943. When a fuel dump caught fire and ignited the clothing of personnel sleeping nearby, Sergeant Clark, ignoring the spreading flames, wrapped two of the victims in blankets, and thereby extinguished their burning clothing. His display of calmness and quick thinking, coupled with a disregard for his own life, prevented severe injury and possible death and reflected creditably on himself and his organization. Residence at enlistment: Alliance, Mich.
