Silver Star

Citation: Under the provisions of AR 600-45, 22 September 1943, as amended, and in accordance with authority contained in paragraph 4, Section I, Circular 66, Headquarters First U.S. Army, 18 May 1944, Bruno J. Czernik, 36722446, Private, Company E, 16th Infantry, is awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action in the vicinity of Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy, France, 6 June 1944. Private Czernik, although wounded by enemy machine-gun fire while carrying his valuable though burdensome flame-thrower, refused to consider his own welfare and persisted in his efforts until he had reached shore. Private Czernik’s exceptional courage set a splendid example for his comrades and saved a most essential weapon. Residence at enlistment: Phoenix, Illinois.

Citation: Under the provisions of AR 600-45, 22 September 1943, as amended, and in accordance with authority contained in paragraph 4, Section I, Circular 2, Headquarters First U.S. Army, 4 January 1945, Bruno J. Czernik, 36722446, Private, Company E, 16th Infantry, for heroism in the vicinity of Braunton, Devonshire, England, 24 February 1944. When a vehicle loaded with ammunition and flame throwers caught fire, Private Czernik, despite severe burns and latent danger from highly imfflammable shells, skillfully extinguished the blaze. Private Czernik’s heroic actions and initiative merit the highest praise. Residence at enlistment: Phoenix, Illinois.
