Silver Star
Citation: Under the provisions of AR 600-45, 22 September 1943, as amended, and in accordance with authority contained in paragraph 4, Section I, Circular 66, Headquarters First U.S. Army, 18 May 1944, Leonard C. Godfray, O-20344, Major, Service Company, 16th Infantry, is posthumously awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action in the vicinity of Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy, France, 6 June 1944. With complete disregard for personal safety, Major Godfray repeatedly crossed open beach under intense fire, reorganizing troops and, by his own outstanding heroism, encouraging the men to resume their attack. While continuing his vital mission of coordinating assault elements, Major Godfray was mortally wounded by an enemy sniper. His extraordinary courage and devotion to duty were invaluable to the success of the invasion. Entered military service from: Rhode Island. Address: Care of the Adjutant General, Washington 25, D.C. Next of kin: Mrs. Marian E. Godfray, Wife, 11 Colby St., Edgewood, Rhode Island.
