Soldier’s Medal

Citation: Under the provisions of AR 600-45, 22 September 1943, as amended, and in accordance with authority contained in paragraph 4, Section I, Circular 2, Headquarters First U.S. Army, 4 January 1945, John E. Horyczun, 12021458, Private First Class, Headquarters Company, 16th Infantry, is awarded the Soldier’s Medal for heroism in Belgium, 28 December 1944. When a friendly plane crashed and burst into flames near his position, Private Horyczun unhesitatingly rushed to the scene and, disregarding the fire and imminent danger of explosion, extricated the pilot from the wreckage. Private Horyczun’s courageous and unselfish act, performed at the risk of his life, is in keeping with the finest traditions of the Service. Residence at enlistment: West Islip, New York.
