Captain James D. Nehl, 37, was killed in action by enemy insurgents during a direct fire engagement while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan. When killed, he was leading an element into a reinforcing position during an enemy engagement. This was his first deployment to Afghanistan. He also previously deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
