Soldier’s Medal

Citation: Under the provisions of AR 600-45, 22 September 1943, as amended, and in accordance with authority contained in paragraph 4, Section I, Circular 66, Headquarters First U.S. Army, 18 May 1944, Charley E. Banner, 37244968, Private, Company K, 16th Infantry, is awarded the Soldier’s Medal for heroism in Normandy, France, 13 July 1944. When an activated fragmentation grenade fell from a comrade’s pack to the floor of a crowded troop carrier, Private Banner, at the risk of almost certain death, picked up the grenade and threw it from the truck. His heroic act prevented heavy loss of life. Residence at enlistment: Harris, Missouri.

Bronze Star Medal

Citation: Under the provisions of AR 600-45, 22 September 1943, as amended, and in accordance with authority contained in paragraph 2, Section I, Circular 6, Headquarters Third U.S. Army, 26 April 1944, Charley E. Banner, 37244968, Private, Company K, 16th Infantry, is awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy in the vicinity of Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy, France, 6 June 1944. Despite heavy enemy mortar, artillery, and machine-gun fire, Private Banner fearlessly crawled across exposed beach and with his rocket launcher established a defense against possible hostile tank attacks. Private Banner’s heroic actions and unswerving devotion to duty exemplify the finest traditions of the Service. Residence at enlistment: Harris, Missouri.
